🚨 Choosing a Private Carer🚨

I would like to raise awareness regarding the use of private carers and personal assistants, particularly when supporting vulnerable adults.

Many people choose to employ a private carer directly rather than through a regulated care agency. Whilst this can offer greater flexibility and choice, it is important that individuals and families are aware of the safeguards they should consider before employing someone in a caring role.

A private carer who is employed directly is not necessarily required to be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and there is not always a legal requirement for them to hold a DBS check, depending on the circumstances of their employment. However, carrying out appropriate background checks and verifying references is strongly recommended as part of safer recruitment practices.

Individuals considering employing a private carer should also ensure that:

Suitable references are obtained and verified.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring DBS check is completed.

The carer has appropriate skills, training, and experience.

Appropriate insurance arrangements are in place.

Employment and safeguarding responsibilities are fully understood.

Any concerns or safeguarding issues are reported promptly to the relevant authorities.

Where possible, using reputable organisations, local authority-approved services, or recognised personal assistant schemes can provide additional reassurance and support.

The safety and wellbeing of vulnerable people must remain the primary consideration when arranging care and support.
